BAKER COUNTY, Florida -- Deputies with the Baker County Sheriff’s Office responded Jan. 17 to a reported domestic violence incident on Harry Rewis Road, where an adult male was reported shot by a family member.
As deputies approached the residence, they were fired upon, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Deputies returned fire, critically wounding the suspect. One deputy was shot in the arm during the exchange and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) was called in to investigate the deputy-involved shooting, consistent with standard protocol.
The sheriff’s office later confirmed the injured deputy was released from the hospital and returned home.
Authorities also reported that the suspect was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Marcus Shane Hodges, 36, and the victim as Marcus Gene Hodges, 60. Investigators said the victim was the suspect’s father.
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the initial shooting and the subsequent exchange of gunfire. Additional details will be released as the investigation progresses, according to the sheriff’s office.
