Video: Amazon Driver Tries to Make Delivery During N.C. Police Standoff

March 23, 2023
A bystander captured footage of a seemingly determined Amazon courier walking through the scene of a tragic 20-hour SWAT standoff in Cary involving an armed man holding his 11-year-old son hostage.

For decades, the U.S. Postal Service has maintained that neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night will keep the mail from getting through.

But what about an active police standoff?

Apparently, that's no obstacle for at least one Amazon delivery driver in North Carolina.

Video footage shot by a bystander captured a courier seemingly making sure his package made it to its destination in Cary on Feb. 22, despite the location being in the midst of a deadly 20-hour standoff between police and an armed suspect, the New York Post reports. In the video, the delivery driver is seen breaching a police perimeter on foot before he was stopped by officers.

No details have been released concerning where the courier was going or what made him so determined to get the package where it needed to be. It was speculated that the recipient was in the lockdown area, which was an apartment complex.

It also was unclear if the driver was arrested or charged in the incident.

White the delivery driver's persistence was amusing to some, the standoff had more tragic implications. An armed man had barricaded himself in an apartment while holding his 11-year-old son hostage.

The man eventually killed himself during the nearly 24-hour standoff. The boy suffered minor gunshot wounds and other injuries in the incident, WRAL-TV reports. Hundreds of people helped get the child out of the apartment and survive, Cary Police Chief Terry Suit said at the time.

"Negotiators did a remarkable job securing his release, then did another remarkable job trying to work with this individual," he said.

"There were highs and lows, you could tell this man was in a dark place," added Sult. "I have no words to express the problem that we face with mental illness in this country."
