NORFOLK, Virginia -- A Norfolk police officer and several community members worked together to rescue a driver after a vehicle became trapped in a sinkhole on East City Hall Avenue earlier this week.

According to the Norfolk Police Department, Officer A.J. Stevenson responded quickly after the vehicle was affected by the sinkhole. As the driver remained inside, the officer enlisted the help of nearby citizens to assist with the rescue.

Body camera audio captures Officer Stevenson calmly directing the driver while asking bystanders to help stabilize the rescue by holding onto his duty belt. Within approximately one minute, Officer Stevenson safely pulled the driver from the vehicle and onto solid ground.

During the rescue, Officer Stevenson repeatedly reassured the driver, telling the individual to remain still while coordinating the effort with the assisting citizens. After the driver was safely removed, a bystander praised the officer's actions, saying, "Nice job," to which the driver replied, "Thank you."

The Norfolk Police Department said the incident highlights the value of cooperation between law enforcement officers and the community during emergency situations. The successful rescue was completed without reported injuries and demonstrated how quick action and public assistance can help resolve rapidly evolving incidents.
