A man was taken into custody early Friday after North Carolina police deployed a flashbang grenade during an hourslong standoff at an apartment complex.

Wake Forest police responded to a reported disturbance at an apartment complex just after 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the department. A caller reported that Roman East, 27, was intoxicated and had made threats toward her.

Before officers arrived, East allegedly locked the woman out of her apartment while a juvenile remained inside. Police said East and the woman had a previous relationship and are the parents of the child.

East remained barricaded inside the apartment for several hours and refused to cooperate despite repeated efforts by police negotiators, authorities said. At about 6:40 a.m., East exited the apartment.

In video from the scene, officers can be seen telling East to drop to his knees, WRAL-TV reports. When he didn't comply, police deployed a flashbang grenade, which incapacitated East.

The juvenile was released unharmed.

East was charged with felony second-degree kidnapping and misdemeanor resisting a public officer. Police said he was also served with an outstanding warrant for communicating threats related to an unrelated case.

He is being held at the Wake County Detention Center.
