A Houston police officer was injured Wednesday in a daylight shootout with a gunman, who was fatally shot in the exchange.
The shooting happened just before 4 p.m. when an officer responded to a report of a suspicious person walking near a school, the police department stated in a news release. When the officer tried to speak with the man, the suspect pulled out a gun and began shooting.
The officer returned fire, and the suspect was struck. Gunfire from the suspect also wounded the officer.
A bystander's video footage captured the gun battle, KHOU-TV reports.
Following the shooting, the officer rendered first aid to the suspect. Medics arrived at the scene, and the suspect was pronounced dead.
The officer injury wasn't considered life-threatening, and he was treated at the scene.
The officer immediately began rendering first aid until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The officer was treated at the scene for a non-life-threatening injury.
The shooting is under investigation.
