A Houston police officer shot a suspect during a struggle following a traffic stop early Sunday in northeast Houston.
The incident happened at around 1:40 a.m. Jan. 11 when officers were making a traffic stop, according to the department. The driver—identified as Sergio Almaza, 24—was unable to produce a valid ID, and officers found he had outstanding warrants, including a felony warrant.
When police tried to take Almaza into custody, a struggle erupted. During the altercation, an officer deployed a Taser, but Almaza continued to resist.
Finally, an officer fired his weapon, and Almaza was struck. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and remains hospitalized.
No officers were injured in the incident. The shooing is under investigation.
