A man stabbed and killed a woman and wounded three others before a Virginia state trooper fatally shot him during a road‑rage incident Sunday.

State police said the episode began shortly after 1:17 p.m. on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County when a trooper responded to reports of a crash and escalating road‑rage confrontation, CNN reports. When the trooper arrived, the suspect approached holding a knife, prompting the trooper to open fire in self‑defense, police said in a statement.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Police said the woman who was killed was 39, and a dog at the scene was also stabbed to death. The conditions of the surviving victims have not been released.

A preliminary investigation found that the stabbings happened after the initial vehicle crash, police said. Several lanes of the Beltway were shut down for hours as detectives processed the scene and drivers sat in stopped traffic.

Witnesses told CNN they saw two damaged cars, multiple victims covered in blood, and a man swinging a knife at motorists before the shooting. One witness said he saw the trooper arrive and fire two to three shots as the confrontation unfolded, CNN reports.

The investigation is ongoing.
