Three Chicago police officers injured in a shooting Thursday that left a 14-year-old boy dead and four others wounded.
The incident happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. when police responded to a shootout that erupted between two groups of people in the Fuller Park neighborhood, WLS-TV reports. When officers reached the scene, they encountered an armed suspect among several wounded individuals.
The suspect began shooting at officers, who returned fire. Police apprehended the suspect after a brief chase.
Three officers were taken to the hospital for observation following the incident. They had not been shot, but no details were released concerning the nature of the injuries.
The male suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the incident. Authorities were unsure when he was shot.
A 14-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after he was shot in the chest. He later died.
The other injuries included:
- a 21-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the hand
- a 19-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the chest and leg
- an 18-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back
- a 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the leg
Police recovered two handguns at the scene. The shooting is under investigation.
