OAKLAND—Police chased a bullet-riddled car through city streets, after hearing gunfire and watching an involved vehicle commit at least 10 moving violations, according to court records.

But when the finally pulled over the white 2023 Toyota Camry near Broadway and Shore Line Drive in Alameda, police say they were greeted with a spontaneous confession.

“I was only trying to rob, and someone shot at me, which is why I panicked,” a 19-year-old Richmond man allegedly told officers. Now, he faces felony charges of attempted burglary and attempted unlawful entry of a vehicle, as well as a misdemeanor resisting arrest count, court records show.

The 19-year-old, a Richmond resident, told police he was a passenger in the Toyota and that the driver ran off before police arrested him. Police found a loaded firearm along the route of the pursuit and believe that someone in the bullet-riddled Toyota tossed the gun along the way.

The shooting occurred a little before 3 a.m. on Aug. 24, near Davis Street and 34th Avenue in Oakland. Authorities believe that the attempted car burglary was interrupted by a man who allegedly shot into the suspects’ car. When they interviewed him, he claimed the suspects had fired into the air during the incident. The man was detained but not charged, court records show.

The 19-year-old suspect was released from jail after an Aug. 26 court appearance but ordered not to drive a car or possess guns, records show.
