Ga. Police K-9 Wounded in Shooting with Domestic Incident Suspect

A Gwinnett County police K-9 was in stable condition after the dog was shot and wounded when an armed man fleeing an "aggravated domestic incident" in Lawrenceville opened fire at police.

A Georgia police K-9 was shot and wounded by a suspect in a domestic disturbance late Monday.

Gwinnett County police responded to a report concerning an "aggravated domestic incident" just before 10:30 p.m. at a home in Lawrenceville, WXIA-TV reports. According to the call, an armed man had been threatening a woman, but the suspect had fled by the time officers arrived.

The department's aviation and K-9 units were deployed to search for the man in a nearby wooded area. When the suspect was found, he allegedly began shooting at police and struck a police K-9.

An officer returned fire, and the suspect was wounded in the exchange. Police provided aid for the man at the scene before he was taken to the hospital.

The wounded K-9 was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to survive, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“The K-9 is at the vet (and) is in stable condition at this time,” Cpl. Ryan Winderweedle said Tuesday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the shooting.
