SAVANNAH, Georgia -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Savannah at the request of the Savannah Police Department following a fatal encounter that left one man dead and two officers injured.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the incident occurred on June 23, 2026, in Savannah, Chatham County. Authorities identified the deceased as Nicholaus Oxendine, 35, of Savannah. Two Savannah Police Department officers sustained minor injuries during the encounter and were treated at a local hospital before being released.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 7:15 a.m., two Savannah Police Department officers were on patrol when they observed Oxendine loitering near a closed business at the intersection of East Victory Drive and Bull Street. Officers initiated a contact with Oxendine as part of a field interview.
During the interaction, Oxendine allegedly attacked one of the officers. He then reportedly attempted to assault the second officer. In response, one of the officers discharged their firearm, striking Oxendine and ending the confrontation.
Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported Oxendine to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
The GBI has taken over the investigation, which remains active and ongoing. Oxendine’s body will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler for an autopsy as part of the standard investigative process.
