Newman began a driving-while-intoxicated investigation with the truck's driver, identified as Joshua Keller. The two began arguing, and Keller got back into his truck and tried to drive away.

When Newman tried to detain Keller, the driver pulled a gun and began shooting. Newman was struck in the neck, but he was able to return fire as he fell to the ground and Keller fled.

The released body camera footage shows the confrontation with Keller and Newman returning fire.

Keller crashed on the interstate after fleeing and leading police on a chase. He was fatally shot by police, and a handgun was recovered from the scene.

Newman was treated at the scene by respnding officers, and he was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. He spent time in intensive care and a rehab facility before being released to recover at home in June, according to the River Valley Democrat-Gazette.

"We remain deeply grateful that Officer Newman survived his injuries," the department stated in Monday's relase. "This incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers officers can face while serving our community."

Prosecutors cleared Newman and the other officers in the incident. The department is still processing video footage from it, and investigators are conducting an internal review to determine whether policies and procedures were followed.
