An Illinois police released video footage Tuesday of a struggle between an officer and driver during a May traffic stop that led to a deadly shooting when the suspect pulled a concealed gun.

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. May 31 when an Oak Park police officer had pulled over a driver—later identified as Christian Wallace—at a gas station for a moving violation, the department stated in a press release. When the officer began patting Wallace down, he uncovered a concealed handgun.

That's when a struggle erupted. As the officer tried to handcuff Wallace, the suspect gained control of his firearm and freed himself.

The officer opened fire with his weapon, and Wallace was struck four times. Gas station security camera and dashcam footage captured the stop and the struggle. 

Joined by other responding police, the officer administered aid at the scene following the shooting. Wallace was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer also was taken to the hospital after the incident, but no details were released concerning how he was injured or the nature of the injuries. He was released June 1 and remains on medical leave.

Police recovered a firearm with a defaced serial number at the scene, according to an earlier press release.

The shooting is under investigation.
