That's when the deputy asked the passenger in the back seat—later identified as Michael Decker—to exit the vehicle. While the two were talking on the roadside, a struggle ensued, and Decker pulled a gun and began shooting.
Body and dashboard camera footage shows the chaotic confrontation.
The deputy wasn't struck by gunfire, but he was injured when he fell down an embankment during the shooting, according to the Ohio Attorney General's Office. Decker then took off in the SUV, kicking off a chase.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Cadiz police joined the sheriff's office in the pursuit, which reached speeds of over 100 mph. Spike strips were deployed multiple times, and the tire deflation devices were finally able to disable the vehicle.
With the SUV out of commission, Decker exited the vehicle and began shooting again. This time, a highway patrol cruiser was struck by gunfire.
Decker fled the scene on foot and tried to escape in a wooded area. He eventually was located by a highway patrol helicopter after several hours.
A highway patrol tactical team and a K-9 were called in, and Decker was ordered to surrender. He refused and brandished a handgun, leading to an officer to open fire.
Decker was struck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The Harrison County Sheriff's Office is grateful for all the law enforcement agencies cooperation and support in the apprehension of a dangerous fugitive in Harrison County," the agency stated.
The shooting is under investigation.
