Video: Fla. Sheriff's Officers Stop Charging Suspect Armed with Knife

A knife-wielding man is accused of advancing on Florida police during a domestic violence investigation last month before he was fatally shot by officers.

The shooting happened when Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officers were called to a home Feb. 12 for a report that an intoxicated 62-year-old man—identified as Jose Cabrera—armed with a knife had assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her and himself, the agency stated in a news release. When officers arrived, the wife told officers that Cabrera had fled in his vehicle.

Police later reached Cabrera by phone, and he allegedly told an officer he would “have to kill him” before he went back to prison.

Shortly after midnight, sheriff's officers found Cabrera parked in a driveway with a knife within reach. As the officers approached, Cabrera armed himself, stepped out of the vehicle and ignored repeated orders to drop the knife.

“Come on, shoot me!” Cabrera allegedly told officers as he advanced on them.

All three officers opened fire, and Cabrera was struck. Police provided medical aid until medics arrived, and Cabrera was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cabrera, a convicted felon, would have faced charges of aggravated domestic assault and aggravated assault on an officer had he survived, the sheriff's office stated.

The shooting is under investigation.
