Florida deputies fatally shot a knife-wielding woman who charged at and attacked them during a call last month.
The incident happened at about 11 p.m. May 1 when Orange County sheriff's deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call from an individual claiming they had been beaten and strangled, WESH-TV reports. When deputies arrived at the second-floor Orlando apartment where the call originated, they heard screams coming from inside.
Deputies breached the door, and they could hear a woman crying inside. Despite the door being breached, deputies stayed outside as they tried to talk with the woman, later identified as Vanessa Eugene, 19.
Deputies were in the process of clearing the apartment when Eugene—dressed in a dark hoodie—charged at and attacked them with a knife. That's when two deputies opened fire.
Eugene was struck, and she was rushed to the hospital, where she died.
Investigators believe Eugene was alone in the apartment, and the shooting is under investigation.
