Watch LAPD Officers, Gunman Exchange Gunfire After Foot Chase

An armed was shot and wounded when he exchanged gunfire with LAPD officers last month.

The shooting happened just before 12:30 p.m. Nov. 17 when LAPD officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the city's Topanga neighborhood, the department stated in a news release. According to reports, the suspect—later identified as Marcus Hayes, 27—allegedly pointed a gun at someone during the incident.

Once officers reached the scene, they ordered Hayes, who had ran past them, to drop his weapon. A foot chase ensued when Hayes refused to comply, and officers followed through apartment buildings.

Finally, Hayes stopped and confronted officers. He's accused of raising his weapon and began shooting at police.

Officers returned fire, but Hayes was not struck. He then threw his gun to the ground and surrendered.

As officers were taking Hayes into custody, he resisted officers and tried to punch them. Hayes was finally subdued following a brief struggle.

No one was injured apprehending Hayes. Police recovered a loaded 9mm pistol and a 15-round magazine at the scene of the incident.
