Quick actions by Tampa police on patrol saved the life of a boy choking on a small tomato when they were flagged down and swiftly dislodged the vegetable from the child's throat.
Flagged-down Florida police officers saved the life of a toddler choking on a tomato last month.
The rescue happened just before 6 p.m. April 24 as Tampa police officers were on patrol when they were approached by a man about a choking boy, WTSP-TV reports. The child had been eating a tomato when he began choking.
One of the officers quickly put the toddler on his knees and struck his back repeatedly. After several pats on the back, the tomato became dislodged from his throat.
"He's breathing, he's making noise," an officer is heard saying.
When the boy asked what caused him to choke, the officer holidng him replied: "It was a little tomato."
"A terrifying moment turned into a life saved," the department stated in a social media post. "Thanks to the quick, compassionate response of our officers, the toddler is safe today."
