Tenn. Officer Stops Man with Knives who Tried to Rob Armored Van

While responding to a call about a possible attempted armored van robbery, a Murfreesboro police officer confronted a man who charged at him with two knives.

A Tennessee police officer fatally shot a knife-wielding man who tried to rob an armored van last week.

The incident happened just before 9:15 a.m. when a Murfreesboro police officer responded to a call at a restaurant involving a man who tried to rob an armored van driver at a shopping plaza ATM, WKRN-TV reports. When the driver drew a gun, the man—identified as Steven James Murphy—fled to a nearby deli, according to The Tennessean.

Once inside the deli, Murphy allegedly tried to rob that business.

"I'm here for money," he told employees, according to WKRN.

Murphy then chased the employees around the deli before they were able to escape.

When the officer arrived at the scene, he confronted Murphy and ordered him to surrender. Murphy, who was wielding two knives, charged at the officer, screaming.

The officer shot Murphy, who was rushed to the hospital. He eventually died of his injuries.

"It's a sad day any time any resident in our city loses their life," Larry Fowers, a police spokesman, told The Tennessean. "Our heart goes out to his family, who will be grieving. Our hearts also go out to our officer who was involved in this because he and his family will have to deal with this as well."

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.
