Video: Drunk Driver Crashes into Ore. Police Cruiser During DUI Stop

Aug. 17, 2023
Body camera footage captured an out-of-control car slamming into an unoccupied Tigard police cruiser while officers were conducting field sobriety tests with another driver.

An accused drunken driver slammed into an Oregon police cruiser while officers were involved with an earlier DUI investigation last week.

The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. Aug. 11 after Tigard police had stopped a driver going 106 mph in a 55 mph construction zone, the department stated in a news release. The driver traveled almost 2 miles before stopping for the officer, who suspected the driver was under the influence.

Officer began conducting field sobriety tests with the driver on the roadside when an out-of-control vehicle crashed into an unoccupied patrol car. One of the officer's body cameras captured the crashed.

The driver and her passenger weren't seriously injured in the incident, and Beaverton police arrested the driver. She was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, reckless endangering, reckless endangerment of a highway worker and criminal mischief.

Police also arrested the driver in the original stop, and he was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and recklessly endangering a highway worker.

"We are grateful nobody was seriously hurt," the department stated. "If you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, move over to give them space and never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol."
