Body camera footage captured a Florida SWAT unit fatally shooting a suspect when he threatened to stab a police K-9 while officers were trying to arrest the man after he allegedly held his ex-girlfriend hostage earlier this month.
The incident happened April 12 when Jacksonville sheriff's officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a home near Patton Park, WTLV-TV reports. According to the sheriff's office, Matvey Klimenko, 38, had broken into his ex-girlfriend's home and threatened to kill her while holding her hostage.
A SWAT unit was called to the scene to handle the situation with Klimenko, who had a history of domestic violence. Restraining orders had been filed against him by multiple women, including his mother and sister.
Klimenko was spotted by officers as they gathered by their vehicles at the scene. Less-lethal rounds were deployed to try to subdue the running Klimenko, who is seen armed with a knife in body camera footage.
Zeke, a sheriff's office K-9, was then ordered to take down Klimenko, who appeared to raise his knife in an attempt to stab the dog.
"Don't let him stab him, don't let him stab him!" Zeke's K-9 officer can be heard yelling in the video footage.
Officers opened fire, and Klimenko was killed in the exchange.
