What to know

  • A Fort Lauderdale police officer rushed his wounded K‑9 partner to an emergency clinic after the dog was shot while tracking a burglary suspect, newly released body‑camera footage shows.
  • Police say the suspect opened fire from a tree as the K‑9 approached, shattering the dog’s upper arm before officers took the suspect into custody and recovered a gun.
  • The K‑9 underwent five hours of surgery to repair the injury and is now recovering at home, with officers describing the dog as a full member of the department.

Appie was struck, and his upper arm was shattered in two places. In body camera footage, Appie's handler is seen carrying the dog to a cruiser and rushing to an emergency clinic.

"My dog has been shot," the officer is heard saying in the footage. "Buddy, I love you. I love you, bud."

Bouie was finally apprehended with the help of another K-9. The suspect was taken into a custody, and a gun was recovered at the scene.

Appie underwent a five-hour surgery following the shooting and has been recovering at home. Doctors, who inserted screws to repair the bone, say the dog was lucky in the incident, according to CBS News.

"It seems like the bullet actually ricocheted off the bone and caused the break instead of kind of going right through it," said Dr. Kevin Frame, a veterinary surgeon.

"Everybody looks at him as a dog, but he's one of us," Sgt. Dan Geiger told CBS News. "He's an officer with us. He's our partner, and we're going to stand by him through this whole thing."
