A 9-year-old boy is in stable condition after Atlanta police officers rushed him to the hospital when he was shot inside a residence last week.
Police responded to a report at about 6:40 a.m. Feb. 8 of a child shot at a home, the department stated in a social media post. When officers entered the residence, they found a boy bleeding heavily from a severe gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The child was drifting in and out of consciousness as officers immediately began rendering aid. That included applying a chest seal to control the bleeding, and their actions were caught on body camera footage.
As the child’s condition worsened while waiting for medics to arrive, officers decied to drive him to the hospital in a cruiser. Doctors later told police that the officers’ swift actions were instrumental in stabilizing the child, who remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Investigators are working to identify and locate the three male suspects responsible for firing into the home. But authorities cautioned that the details are preliminary and could change as the investigation progresses.
