12 Favorite Christmas Cops and Crooks Movies (Besides 'Die Hard')
- Now that "Die Hard" is officially in the Christmas movie canon, we look at other entertaining crime movies set during the holidays. See what titles made the list and vote for your favorite.
It has become somewhat of a Christmas season tradition for OFFICER Media Group to post up a Christmas Wish List, offering gift ideas for those seeking the perfect gift for the law enforcement professional in their life. Keep in mind that while these are great gift ideas for law enforcement officers, not all of them are only for on-duty use… although they all certainly can be. Let’s dig in.
I'm going to start out with the 5.11 Tactical Bailout Bag. While this bag is specifically designed for the officer who is grabbing his rifle and responding to an active assailant incident, it can also serve as a great hiking sling bag, emergency supplies bag for your personal vehicle or even a trauma equipment bag for your house. The space available in it and the organization designed in offers up a plethora of options for use.
Next up are a few pieces from ASP. Long known for their batons and having taken the handcuff market by storm, ASP is manufacturing their Police Duty Knife line with several assisted opening, liner lock, pocket-clip knives perfect for on- or off-duty use. Just recently ASP also released their Griffin-C Light - an LED driven, rechargeable, tri-fuel light that can push a brilliant 3,000 lumens or be programmed down to 25 or400 lumens and has a strobe function as well. Weighing about half a pound and measuring just under 7" long, it will serve any officer well (or their spouse).
With multitools having been around for decades, when was the last time you saw something completely new? Enter the Nextorch MT20 multitool with EMS sheers, an oxygen tank wrench and flexi-cuff cutter all included. This trifold tool is perfect for making your officer a hero to every firefighter and EMT.
And speaking of being the hero, all too often emergency services personnel can’t communicate with the very people they are trying to help, save or otherwise assist. Enter the Pocketalk translation tool. About the size of an older iPod, this device can translate from or to English and over 350 other languages. Whether it’s in text or audibly, the Pocketalk is a price-effective handy tool to have available. I tested it more on Uber rides than duty use!
At IACP this year I was in the Point Blank booth and while they are best known for their body armor, I found an entire duty belt set that they’ve recently released. While I haven’t had a chance to fully test the set yet, my minor experience with it in their booth showed it to be easily adjustable, comfortable and quick to modify with whatever holster or pouches you need. I suspect it will be just as handy for outdoor off-duty use as it will be for duty use (once I have a chance to fully test it).
And that brings me to the three most pricey items on our wish list. Two are rifles that, while not newly released, I believe are fairly innovative and unique with specific potential application for some law enforcement uses. The last is an electronic mobility vehicle that we just recently saw at IACP in Denver.
The two rifles are both from Henry Repeating Arms, a company very well known for its long time support of the law enforcement community. The first rifle is the newer of the two — the Lever Action Supreme. I’ve heard my share of arguments against using a lever action rifle in law enforcement, but most of them boil down to “it doesn’t hold as many rounds as I think I need,” or “I can’t fire it fast enough.” Being fed from 30-round box magazines (you know, your standard AR-style magazine) and chambered for .223 (again, the same caliber as most AR-style rifles), the Lever Action Supreme offers all the firepower officers seem to want, or can articulate the need for. As to firing fast, you can fire as fast as you can work that action and aim properly. It isn’t semi-automatic, but a lot of firearms instructors have had officers on the line who seem to think that faster is better and are willing to sacrifice accuracy to attain speed. The lever action slows them down and shot placement improves. The second rifle is the Homesteader, a semi-automatic rifle fed from box magazines and chambered in 9mm. Using a common caliber makes it easier to provide ammo for a long gun and a handgun at the same time, and putting it in a long gun offers the ability to engage targets past handgun range but not as far out as a true rifle caliber can reach. For agencies that may be fighting against prejudice against the AR-style rifles and/or the property owner who is trying to keep varmints off his property, the Homesteader fills the need.
Last but not least is the Trikke Positron electric mobility vehicle. I also saw this at IACP and was impressed by how maneuverable it is, to include going down stairs thanks to the independent suspension to the rear wheels tires. With a weight capacity (on board) limit of 350 pounds and the ability to tow another 350 pounds, the Trikke Positron is a great option for inner-city, schools, parks, malls and more. On the personal use side, since it weighs less than 100#, it can be folded, loaded into your vehicle, taken to your local favorite outing area and unloaded with ease.
Any police officer, deputy sheriff, trooper, etc. should be delighted to get any one (or all) of these under the tree this season. Each serves a practical use but with a healthy side dish of "this is going to be a lot of fun!"
