Watch Baltimore County Police Clash with Armed Shooting Suspect

A man is in serious but stable condition Sunday after being shot by police in Overlea the night before, according to Baltimore County Police.

Officers were dispatched around 9:15 p.m. to the 4900 block of Hazelwood Avenue for a report of shots fired, the department said. They found spent shell casings outside the Hazelwood Inn, but no suspect was at the scene, according to police. Police didn’t say what they think led up to the shooting.

Officers received information that indicated the armed individual was nearby. Police encountered a man down the street near the Charlie Brown Convenience Store who was carrying a weapon, according to BCPD. The man ran from officers, according to a news release.

Police said the man still didn’t drop the weapon and ducked near cars before shots were fired.

A police spokesperson told The Baltimore Sun on Sunday, “It is unknown if the suspect fired his weapon at the officers, and detectives are still trying to determine if that occurred.”

According to police, officers rendered first aid, and the suspect was later taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. A spokesperson said the man was struck twice in the upper body, “and possibly once in the leg.”

No officers were injured.

Police said at the scene Saturday that officers located a gun nearby the suspect when he was taken into custody.

Homicide detectives are investigating. If the suspect dies from his injuries, officials said, the attorney general will take over the investigation.

Up to four officers were involved in the shooting, police said. All of the officers were wearing body-worn cameras and have been placed on routine administrative leave, in line with department policy.

Sunday morning, both the Hazelwood Inn and the Charlie Brown Convenience Store were open with no sign of the police activity from the night before.

The location police gave for the shooting is about 1,000 feet from the Hazelwood Inn, a restaurant that serves Italian, American, and seafood classics, and surrounded by a large parking lot. Between the two spots are the Hazelwood Skatepark, a towing business, and 21 Bar and Grill, across the street from a few single-family homes.
