Weekend (Feb. 14-16)

A Scotts Bluff County, Neb. corrections officer was declared dead Sunday after being attacked by a teenage inmate early Friday morning.

Officials say that Corrections Officer Amanda Baker was strangled by 15-year-old Dylan Cadeilhac at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.

A Dallas police officer was wounded in a shootout Saturday night and the suspect was taken into custody.

Officer Joshua Burns was shot three times and officials credited his bulletproof vest with stopping a bullet to his chest.

A Warrenton, Mo. police officer was injured Friday afternoon when he was hit by a sliding pickup truck as he was investigating an earlier crash.

Officer Charles T. Lancey, who sustained moderate injuries, was outside his patrol car when he was struck by the truck.

An Arizona jail inmate was back in custody Friday, hours after escaping to meet his sweetheart on Valentine's Day.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office says Joseph Andrew Dekenipp climbed two walls and crawled through razor wire in order to escape the county detention center.

Monday (Feb. 17)

Two California Highway Patrol officers were killed after their cruiser careened into a guardrail while they were responding to calls about a collision.

Officials said that officers Juan Gonzalez and Brian Law, who went through the academy together and became good friends, were killed on impact.

The Los Angeles Police Commission is set to adopt a change in the way it judges officer-involved shootings.

The move would connect an officer's decision to pull the trigger to his actions in the moments leading up to the incident.

A Chicago Police supervisor accidentally fired his gun in the Central District police station.

A bullet from the sergeant's hit a water pipe and caused it to leak for two hours while police waited on city engineers.

Tuesday (Feb. 18)

The men convicted in the 1971 slayings of two New York City police officers are set to again go before the state parole board to ask for freedom.

Herman Bell and Anthony Bottom, ex-members of a militant black power group, have been routinely rejected for release after displaying little or no remorse in the killngs of officers Joseph Piagentini and Waverly Jones.

A police officer was shot by a suspect while in his patrol car in Wilcox County, Ala.

The officer pulled into the yard of a residence in Pine Hill and was hit by a bullet officials say came from an upstairs window and traveled through the patrol car windshield.

A former armored car guard was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 to 20 years for killing his partner and robbing their truck of $2.3 million in 2012.

Wednesday (Feb. 19)

The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association and the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis are suing the National Football League over its new ban on off-duty officers carrying their guns to games.

The lawsuit claims that a Minnesota law that allows businesses to bar weapons specifically exempts "active licensed" peace officers, trumps the NFL's rules, but the league disagrees.

The sheriff of Chester County, S.C. has found himself pitted against the area's volunteer fire chiefs after a chief and a firefighter were arrested over the weekend for allegedly assaulting deputies at the scene of a crash.

The area's rural fire chiefs threw their support behind the arrested West Chester chief and firefighter during a meeting Wednesday and are asking the state Attorney General's Office to investigate Sheriff Alex Underwood.

A former New York City corrections officer who had a behind-bars affair with a cop-killer was sentenced to one year and one day in prison.

Nancy Gonzalez was convicted of having sex with Ronell Wilson, who had previously been found guilty in the brutal slaying of two NYPD officers.

The Tampa Police Department has started posting some of its most frustrating 911 calls on its Facebook page.

Officials say at least half of the calls the department receives have nothing to do with life and death emergencies.

Thursday (Feb. 20)

Witnesses who took the stand this week took in the trial of a man charged with killing a Michigan state trooper described how they attempted to help the fallen law enforcement officer.

The witness said that Trooper Paul Butterfield II was alive and aware of their presence after he was allegedly wounded by Eric Knysz.

New York's highest court ruled that police can lie when interrogating suspects, but only to a certain extent.

The Court of Appeals decision concluded that when the lies become "patently coercive," any confession cannot be used as evidence.

Mogadishu, Somalia recently began installing road signs for the first time, trying to end a culture of "anything goes" on the streets.

Friday (Feb. 21)

The West Allis, Wis. Police Department was in mourning this week after one of their own died moments after giving birth to twins.

Detective Stacie Napoli served in Iraq and was a 17-year veteran of the police department.

A Texas police union has released a new smartphone application that allows members to quickly report critical incidents to the association's attorneys.

Officials with the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, which represents roughly 19,000 law enforcement officers statewide, say that the program is part of the plan to improve services and restructure the organization.
