Police Officer Joshua Burns was shot three times while responding to a disturbance call Saturday.

A Dallas police officer was wounded in a shootout with a suspect Saturday night.

Officer Joshua Burns was shot three times while responding to a disturbance in the far northeast part of the city according to The Dallas Morning News.

Officials said the officer's bulletproof vest helped stop a shot to his chest, but he sustained wounds to his leg and shoulder and he was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The suspect, Rakeem Perkins was charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a public servant and was also hospitalized after turning himself in following a manhunt.

Burns and Officer Salvador Varillas responded about noon to a call about a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 13000 block of Audelia Road, when they encountered Perkins sitting in a vehicle.

Officials said that the man began shooting at the officers, who returned fire.

Perkins fled on foot, while Burns was left conscious but in "extreme pain." Varillas was uninjured in the shootout.

The shooting is currently under investigation.
