Edmonton Police Const. Travis Jordan and Const. Brett Ryan were shot as they entered an apartment during a call, and officials said it appears the officers had no opportunity to fire their weapons.

Two Canadian police officers were shot and killed during a domestic dispute call early Thursday.

The shooting happened at about 12:45 a.m. as Edmonton police were responding to a domestic call at an apartment, the Edmonton Journal reports.  Const. Travis Jordan, 35 and Const. Brett Ryan, 30 were shot by a male suspect as they entered the apartment, and Chief Dale McFee said it appears that the officers had no opportunity to fire their weapons.

Following the shooting, Jordan and Ryan were rushed to the hospital, where they died. Jordan had been with the agency for nearly nine years, and Ryan had served over five years.

McFee said the male suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A family member was wounded in the incident and taken to the hospital.

“This is unthinkable, this is horrific, this is a tragedy, but we will move on because that’s what we do,” said McFee.
