MONTRÉAL, Canada -- The Montreal Police Service has confirmed that Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane was killed in the line of duty during a police intervention in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood on Monday.

According to authorities, Benredouane, 34, died while responding to an incident involving an armed and dangerous suspect on June 22. The officer had served with the department since 2021.

Authorities said a female police officer and a civilian were also injured during the incident. Both were transported for medical treatment. SPVM reported that the suspect was killed during the operation.

The incident prompted an emergency public safety alert as police warned residents to avoid the area bounded by Côte-des-Neiges Road, McDonald Avenue, Highway 40, and Queen Mary Road. Residents in the affected area were instructed to shelter indoors and lock their doors while officers responded to what police described as an imminent threat.

Later in the day, the Montreal Police Service announced that the threat had been contained and the area secured. However, the quadrilateral encompassing Côte-des-Neiges, McDonald, Highway 40, and Queen Mary remained closed to traffic as investigators continued processing the scene.

Authorities described Benredouane's death as a significant loss to the organization.

"His sense of duty, dedication and professionalism will always be remembered," the department said in a statement.

Flags at Montreal Police Service facilities were lowered as a sign of respect for the fallen officer. The department also established a condolence email address for members of the public wishing to offer support to Benredouane's family and the police community.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
