Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Eric Mueller was fatally shot and two officers were injured when they were ambushed while responding to a disturbance at a Bourget home.

A Canadian police officer was killed and two others were wounded in an ambush during a disturbance call at a home early Thursday.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Eric Mueller was fatally shot during the incident, the CBC reports. One of the wounded officers is in stable condition, and the other officer was treated and relased.

The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. when Mueller and the other officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a home in Bourget and reports of a gunshot. When the officers arrived at the scene, the suspect immediately opened fire on them.

"When three officers arrive on scene and within minutes are shot, one is killed, another is very seriously and critically injured, and another injured to the point of requiring medical attention for simply arriving on scene," said Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique. "I categorize that as an ambush."

The suspect was apprehended by other officers responding to the scene. He has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Carrique spoke about Mueller at a press conference at the department's Ottawa detachment.

"He is described by his colleagues as a coach and mentor," he said. "Somebody that everybody looked up to. The glue that held the ship together."
