A 33-year-old South Carolina deputy was killed in an on-duty vehicle collision Wednesday.

Charleston County Deputy Michael Hendricks had been with the sheriff's office since April 2023, the agency stated in a social media post. He had recently served with the sheriff's office Metro Unit.

"This news has deeply affected all of us," the sheriff's office stated. "Deputy Hendricks was known for showing up every day ready to serve and ready to help others—that commitment didn’t stop when he went home."

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Hendricks was driving a sheriff's office pickup truck when the crash happened around 11:45 a.m., The State reports. Hendricks was approaching an intersection when he collided with a tractor-trailer.

Hendricks died at the scene, and the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to the hospital. No one else was injured in the incident.
