DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy Christina Musil was in her cruiser parked on a highway shoulder in Waterman when a tractor-trailer drove off the road and struck the back of her vehicle.

An Illinois deputy was killed when her cruiser was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer late Thursday.

The crash happened at about 10:40 p.m. as DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy Christina Musil was sitting in her cruiser and parked on the shoulder of a road in Waterman, WGN-TV reports. A tractor-trailer drove off the road and slammed into the back of Musil's vehicle.

The deputy was rushed to the hospital, where she later died. The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured.

It's unclear what caused the tractor-trailer to drive off the road. A woman who said she was the driver's wife told WGN that her husband had been taken into custody.

The Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.

Musil, 35, had been with the sheriff's office for five years, serving in the Corrections and Patrol divisions. She also was a military police officer while serving four years in the Army National Guard.

“Deputy Musil deployed with the 333rd Military Police to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009," Marj. Gen. Rich Neely, the adjudant general for Illinois and commander of the Illinois National Guard, said in a statement. "This was a tough combat deployment, and we know the veterans of that tour remain close today. Like many of our Soldiers who are also law enforcement officers, Christina served her community, state, and nation honorably in multiple ways.”
