Two Indiana sheriff's deputies were killed in a crash on the way to help with a traffic stop early Saturday.

The incident happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. along State Road 26 in Sedalia, the Indiana State Police stated in a news release. Carroll County Deputies Noah Rainey and Dane Northcutt were responding to a call for assistance by a Rossville deputy town marshal trying to pull over a vehicle. Rainey was on duty, at the time, and Northcutt, a corrections officer, was participating in a ride-along.

As the two were on the way to the call, their car left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole. Other officers who came across the crash rendered medical aid, but both deputies were pronounced dead at the scene.

"The Indiana State Police extends our heartfelt condolences to both of their families, friends, and the Carroll County Sheriff's Department," the state agency said.

The crash is under investigation.
