What to know

  • Fort Bend County Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Lewis died Monday from injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run crash while helping a stranded motorist.

  • The driver fled the scene, and the Houston Police Department is leading the investigation as authorities search for a black or dark-colored Honda sedan.

  • Lewis, who joined the agency in 2015 and previously served with the Missouri City Police Department, was remembered by colleagues as a selfless deputy committed to serving his community.

Although Lewis was wearing his uniform at the time of the incident, he had been driving his personal vehicle, KTRK-TV reports. He had been returning home from an extra shift, Chief Deputy Mattie Provost said during a news conference.

"Deputy Lewis demonstrated the very best of law enforcement," the sheriff's office stated. "His selflessness, dedication, and commitment to serving others reflect the core values of our office and the profession he proudly served."

Lewis had been with the sheriff's office since 2015. He had previously served with the Missouri City Police Department.

"That's who he was, always wanting to help people," said Provost.

"Everybody in the community where he worked loved him because he was just a great guy," she added.

The Houston Police Department is heading up the investigation. No suspect has been identified, but authorities are looking for a black or dark-colored Honda sedan.

"I can assure you that we will solve it," said Provost. "It will be solved, and we will bring the person to justice for Deputy Lewis."
