Texas Police Officer, Deputy Fire Chief Killed in Head-On Collision

  • Kaufman Police Officer Austin Cooley, who also served as a Hunt County deputy fire chief, was returning home from working a law enforcement shift when he crashed head-on into a pickup truck just south of Greenville.

A Tennessee deputy was killed in a crash while on patrol over the weekend.

Blount County Sheriff's Deputy Justin Mowery, 30, had been with the agency since 2020, Sheriff James Lee Berrong stated in an online statement. He died in a single-vehicle crash at an intersection just after 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

“I am heartbroken," Berrong stated. "This is devastating for his family, his shift-mates, this agency, and our community."

Berrong praised the Tennessee Highway Patrol for its "swift response" to the incident. He did not provide details about the crash, adding that his agency was working with the highway patrol to determine the cause.

As a deputy, Mowery worked evening patrols, and he earned a spot on the agency's SWAT team in December 2021. Before joining the sheriff's officer, Mowery served as a security officer at University of Tennessee Medical Center.
