Wanted Ind. Man Stops Chase to Smoke From Glass Pipe Before Swimming From Deputies

  • A wanted man was rescued by La Porte County sheriff's deputies after a vehicle pursuit ended in a waterway, where he stopped to smoke from a glass pipe and tried to swim away.

A suspect on a dirt bike led LAPD officers on a wild chase last week as he cut through a park, used his cellphone and took off from a gas station with the hose from the pump still attached before he was apprehended after trying to hide in a trash can.

The crazy pursuit began Wednesday near Dodger Stadium when police confronted a man wanted on suspicion of wielding a firearm while riding in public, KTLA-TV reports. News helicopter and security camera footage captured the incident.

Once police began the chase, the suspect—identified as Christian Fuentes—began speeding and erratically riding his bike. The video footage shows Fuentes stopping for gas at a service station at one point and taking off with the pump's hose still attached to his bike.

As the chase progressed, Fuentes was apparently texting or calling someone with his cellphone, and he allegedly turned to taunt officers. Fuentes' bike sideswiped a vehicle, knocking off the side mirror, and he missed other motorists as he weaved through traffic, sometimes traveling on the wrong side of the street.

When Fuentes cut though a park with kids playing soccer, he appeared to grab a gas container that had been left behind for him. He stopped to quickly try to refuel before escaping again as bystanders fled.

Eventually, Fuentes seem to run out of gas, and he abandoned his dirt bike to fled on foot. The chase finally ended when police captured Fuentes as he tried to hide inside a trash can.

"Shoutout to Northeast Area Lapd officers for displaying professionalism and regard for public safety while taking this fleeing suspect into custody," the department stated in a Friday social media post.

Fuentes—who turned 19 on the day of the chase—was charged with multiple felony counts, including evading police and vandalism, according to KABC-TV. Although police suspected he might be armed, no firearm was found during the incident.
