Four people trapped inside a crashed vehicle that caught fire were rescued by a Kentucky State Police trooper on Interstate 65 in Hardin County Friday afternoon.

The four, all members of the same Louisville family and all in their 20s, were in a Honda C-RV that crashed when a tractor-trailer forced the vehicle off the road, state police said in a news release.

State police said the tractor-trailer was heading south near mile marker 87 when the semi-truck driver merged from the middle lane into the right lane, forcing the C-RV off the right shoulder. The SUV rolled several times before landing on its side, state police said.

Trooper Blaine Miller was in the area on an unrelated call when state police were called about the collision at about 2:10 p.m. The SUV was reportedly smoking, and the family was trapped inside.

Miller arrived almost immediately, as the C-RV was beginning to catch fire and “breached the front windshield of the vehicle, climbed inside, and assisted in removing all four occupants from the vehicle to safety,” the release stated.

All four were treated for minor injuries before being released from Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown.
