Video: Fla. Police Officer Dragged a Block by Driver Fleeing Traffic Stop

Two Eustis police officers were injured during a traffic stop when a driver refused to exit his vehicle, fought with officers and sped away, dragging one officer about a block and throwing another to the ground.

Bodycam: Texas Police Officer Nearly Stuck in Traffic Stop Crash

  • Seconds after taking a driver's license during a traffic stop, an El Paso police officer had a close call when a distracted driver crashed into a stopped vehicle and sent it hurtling down the shoulder.

A Florida police officer was injured Saturday after being dragged for about a block by driver fleeing a traffic stop. 

The incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. when a Eustis Police Officer Kayla Murray pulled over a driver, later identified as Shakoi Donovan, after he was driving erratically, ran a stop sign and appeared to be trying to evade the officer, Inside Lake, an online news outlet, reports. Another officer arrived to assist, and the two observed smoke coming from the vehicle as they approached.

Police released the officers' body camera footage of the stop. Footage from a third officer, Barry Coe, was also released.

When asked about the smoke from his vehicle, Donovan told officers that he had an oil leak and couldn't turn off the engine. Donovan then ordered to exit the vehicle, but he refused.

A struggle began as Murray and Coe tried to pull Donovan from his vehicle. During the fight, Donovan, who had grabbed Murray's ballistic vest, put the car into drive and sped off.

Coe was thrown about 10 to 15 feet, and Murray was dragged about a block. She was found "motionless" by the other officers.

Murray and Coe were taken to the hospital, where they were treated. Coe has returned to work; Murray continues to recover and is expected to return within a week.

Donovan eventually turned himself in about 14 hours later. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
