Mississippi Police Officer Killed in Crash

Philadelphia Police Officer Leann Simpson died in a crash while responding to a call Saturday.

A Philadelphia, Mississippi police officer died in a crash while responding to a call early Saturday morning.

Officer Leann Simpson died as a result of a single-vehicle crash around 2 a.m. on West Beacon Street, according to The Meridian Star.

Philadelphia Police Chief Grant Myers told the newspaper that deputies were conducting a traffic stop on Highway 16. When dispatchers could not make contact with the deputies, they requested police to check on them. 

The 23-year-old officer, who had been the job for 15 months, was responding to that call when she died in the crash.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
