A Mississippi deputy working as a school resource officer was killed Monday after he was struck by a vehicle outside an elementary school.
Lee County Sheriff's Deputy Rick Haggard, 52, was struck at approximately 3:05 p.m. in front of Shannon Elementary School, according to Sheriff Jim H. Johnson. Haggard later died from his injuries sustained in the crash.
Haggard served as a school resource officer at Shannon Elementary School. Johnson announced Haggard's death, along with Superintendent of Education Coke McGee, during a press conference.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the vehicle-pedestrian collision, with help from the Shannon Police Department. Authorities said the investigation was ongoing, and no additional details were released.
“That is all the information that we can give today,” Johnson said.
The sheriff asked the community to keep Haggard’s family and the sheriff's office in their prayers.
