A person armed with an AR-15-style rifle and a nail gun tried to breach the FBI building in Cincinnati early Thursday.

The "critical incident" happened when the armed individual tried to make their way into the Visitor Screening Facility, Reuters reports. During the incident, the brandished the rifle and fired the nail gun into the building before fleeing.

"Law enforcement has traded shots with a male suspect who is wearing a gray shirt and body armor," the Clinton County Emergency Management Agency wrote in a statement.

The agency urged the public to stay inside, and a lockdown has been imposed in the area while the suspect is on the loose. Two highways also have been shut down.

It's unclear why the individual tried to breach the building. Since the FBI's search of former President Donald Trump's Florida residence, the agency has been the target of numerous online threats.
