A former deputy was taken into custody early Monday after he allegedly fired shots at the Boulder County Sheriff's Office headquarters.

A former Colorado deputy was arrested Monday after he allegedly opened fire at the headquarters for the sheriff's office, as well as shot and damaged cruisers at a police station.

The incident began when the dispatch center for the Boulder County Sheriff's Office received a call from a man reporting anxiety just after midnight, the agency stated in a news release. After that call, the man, later identified as Tyler Boyd Reilly, phoned back minutes later and threatened sheriff's office facilities, including the Boulder headquarters and the jail.

Reilly had joined the sheriff's office as a deputy in 2012, working in the jail and patrol divisions. He resigned in 2024 "in lieu of termination for cause," according to the sheriff's office, which didn't offer further details.

After the call, personnel at the agency's facilities were put on alert, and a search began to locate Reilly. Shortly after 12:30 a.m., deputies found that his vehicle had been seen traveling in Boulder County.

Reilly was then spotted at the front door of the sheriff's office headquarters by sergeant just after 1 a.m. Armed with an AR-15-style rifle, he began shooting multiple rounds at the building's entry area.

Deputies confronted outside the buidling, and Reilly was taken into custody. He never gained entry to the headquarters, and no injuries were reported.

Before Reilly reached the sheriff's office headquarters, he allegedly opened fire at several cruisers at the Broomfield Police Department, which is outside Boulder County. No one was injured in that shooting, according to Chief Enea Hempelmann.

The shootings are under investigation.
