A Louisiana deputy was killed and another deputy was critically wounded in a courthouse shooting Monday.

Iberville Parish Sheriff's Deputy Charles Riley and Det. Brett Stassi Jr. were interviewing a suspect just after 7:30 p.m. in the Iberville Parish Courthouse when the shooting happened, the Shreveport Times reports. According to Attorney General Liz Murrill, the two deputies were booking a suspect when the individual somehow obtained a gun.

No details were released on how the shooting transpired, but Riley and Stassi were both struck by gunfire. It's unclear what happened with the suspect following the shooting.

Riley was rushed to the hospital, but he died from his injuries. Stassi, the son of Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi, was in stable but critical condition.

"We're all just stunned and distraught; this just doesn't happen here," said Iberville Parish Deputy Ronnie Hebert, who described Riley as "a helluva deputy and person, one of those guys everybody loved."

The Louisiana State Police is leading the investigation of the shooting. The FBI is also assisting.

On social media, Gov. Jeff Landry called the shooting "absolutely horrific."

"Please join Sharon and me in praying for the deputy killed, for Deputy Stassi who is in stable condition, their families, and the entire Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office. The violence must end," he wrote.
