The Police Department in Firestone, Colorado had for many years operated out of a deficient facility, including a portion of a converted double wide mobile office, compromising officer and staff physical safety, psychological wellbeing, and operational efficiency. In 2016, the Town of Firestone selected the architectural design team and began the pre-design planning, space needs analysis, site selection, and schematic design for a new Public Safety Facility. When the November 2016 bond initiative for project financing failed to gain voters’ approval, the design team regrouped and developed a strategy to educate the public and gather information.
Findings from the early programming work were presented to stakeholders, and a citizen’s task force was formed to engage with the community and to inform the design. A year later, funding was approved, and the project successfully opened in August 2019.
The primary police components of the facility include police administration, 24-hour patrol services, investigations division, forensic lab, secure parking with a covered ready line, booking/holding spaces, armory with workshop, K9 kennels and enclosed run, property/evidence storage, firearms simulator, fitness center and locker rooms, and a police department training room. The lobby area includes public restrooms, and the front desk is shared by the Police Department and Court. This portion of the facility also includes judge’s chambers, prosecutor offices, a conference room/jury room, and a secure restroom. The Courtroom also functions as the Town Board Room.
The Firestone Police Department and Municipal Court has become an anchor within the community and the Town’s master planned Central Park development. The 28,170 square foot facility instills a sense of pride in the officers and staff, symbolizes the transparent relationship between the department and the community it serves, and is a police department recruitment tool featuring leading edge training elements.
