Project Description

The Mansfield Police Department headquarters represents a major transformation for the City of Mansfield, addressing the needs of a growing population and the increasing complexity of public safety operations. Initial planning considered renovation of the existing station and holding building, but collaborative analysis during preliminary design revealed that the existing structures could not accommodate future demands. This led to the development of a purpose-built facility tailored to both current operations and long-term departmental growth.

Located on Heritage Parkway, the new 60,545-square-foot, two-story facility reflects the city’s commitment to high-performance public infrastructure. The building includes specialized areas for law enforcement functions, integrated advanced technology, and flexible spaces that promote community interaction. Design constraints included an existing 300-foot communications tower, which required that the ICC-500-rated storm shelter be carefully positioned outside the tower’s fall zone. Adjustments were made to the shelter’s dimensions to maintain required occupancy standards while ensuring safety. The building’s layout also clearly separates public and secure zones, utilizing a ballistic wall system. To balance performance with budget, the original ballistic panel system was replaced with a cost-effective grouted concrete block solution that maintained the necessary level of protection.

The overall design prioritizes flexibility, efficiency, and scalability. Two adjacent support buildings offer additional capacity for future departmental expansion. Key decisions regarding security, circulation, and infrastructure were shaped by operational needs and long-term value considerations.

The new headquarters serves not only as a functional workspace for law enforcement, but also as a civic landmark — supporting community partnership, enhancing public safety, and reinforcing Mansfield’s future-focused vision.
