VIRGINIA-Officer Dominic Winum, of the Stanley Police Department, died on February 26, 2021. Officer Winum was shot while conducting a traffic stop at about 3:30 in the afternoon. During the traffic stop the suspect exited the vehicle and shot at the officer even before he was able to exit his patrol car.
The suspect fled on foot into woods nearby but was apprehended not far from the scene. When he was found the suspect made a threatening gesture and was shot.
Officer Winum was 48 years old and served with the Stanley Police Department for four years. He was a trooper with the state for 10 years prior to working at the Stanley Police Department.
