A man suspected in a robbery and assault stole an Atlanta police cruiser and crashed into a tanker truck Monday.

The incident happened just before 5:30 p.m. when police were called concerning a report of an armed individual at a home, WANF-TV reports. At the scene, officers spotted a man, later identified as Phelan Thorpe, walking quickly away.

When officers confronted Thorpe, he allegedly yelled that he had killed someone the other day and threatened to shoot others. Thorpe then stole a cruiser as officers were requesting backup.

The suspect drove the vehicle into Clayton County along Interstate 675. That's when he crashed into a tranker truck. 

Thorpe was apprehended following the collision, and he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported, and the crash shut down a section of the interstate.

Thorpe faces multiple charges, including two counts of terroristic threats and acts and hijacking a motor vehicle in the second degree. He also faces robbery and assault charges stemming from a weekend incident in which he is accused of stealing a woman's iPhone while trying to take her purse.
