Video: Suspect Rams LAPD Cruiser Head-On, Points Gun at Police

Newly released LAPD body camera footage captured a chase last month with a suspect in a vehice involved in a felony who made a U-turn and crashed into a cruiser before he was fatally shot after pointing a gun at officers.

The pursuit began at about 9:40 a.m. April 8 when LAPD officers had spotted a BMW wanted in a felony crime, according to a department news release. When the officers began following the vehicle onto the freeway, the driver—later identified as Jesus Ernesto Jaime—sped away to try to escape police.

About a minute into the pursuit, Jaime turned onto a freeway exit ramp and abruptly made a U-turn. The suspect then sped into oncoming and collided head-on with a pursuing cruiser.

Jaime got out of his stopped vehicle and stood behind it as police ordered him to surrender. He refused to comply and pulled out a semi-automatic handgun, pointing it an officer, according to the news release.

Police opened fire, and Jaime was struck. Medics attended to him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the vehicle was taken into custody, but it's unclear if the individual faced any charges. Police recovered a 9mm semi-automatic Glock handgun with 17 rounds was recovered from the scene, and loaded .357 Magnum Astra revolver was found in the BMW.

Two officers were injured in the collision, and they were treated at a nearby hospital and released. No other injuries were reported.

The incident is under investigation.
