Video: Driver Abandons Child after Crash in Milwaukee Police Chase

April 21, 2022
After a Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy witnessed and responded to a violent interstate crash, the driver fled the scene on foot, leaving behind an injured 4-year-old child.

Traffic camera footage captured a Milwaukee police chase last week that ended with a violent crash on a freeway and the driver abandoning a young child in the wreckage.

The incident happened at about 9:45 a.m. April 12 after a Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy spotted and began pursuing a car driving recklessly and speeding along Interstate 43, WITI-TV reports. With the deputy still watching, the driver lost control, and the vehicle bounced off the median before crashing into it again, flipping over and then skidding along the roadway on its roof.

Once the deputy reached the crash scene, the officer saw a 4-year-old child and the driver crawl through the shattered back windshield. The child had cuts and face swelling, and the driver was bleeding.

When the deputy went to get something to stop the driver's bleeding, he fled on foot, leaving the child behind. He jumped the median and ran across the interstate toward local Milwaukee streets. Police eventually apprehended him.

A search of the wrecked car found a loaded AK-47-style rifle. The driver faces child neglect, second degree recklessly endangering safety, possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent and other charges.

Authorities turned the child over to the mother.
