TINLEY PARK, Illinois -- A Tinley Park police officer suffered "several injuries" following a call Saturday of a burglary to a vehicle, the village said in a news release Thursday.

A caller to police had reported seeing someone at Panera Bread at Brookside Marketplace, 191st Street and Harlem Avenue, getting out of a Dodge Durango with Texas license plates and rummaging through an unlocked BMW, police said.

A responding officer spotted the Durango parked, unoccupied, in the fire lane at Best Buy nearby, police said. The officer approached and two men left the store and got into the vehicle.

The officer reached in through the driver's side door to grab the driver, who hit the accelerator and sped away with the officer hanging out of the Durango, police said. The driver lost control and crashed into a tree and he and the passenger ran off, police said.

The officer was taken to Silver Cross Hospital for treatment and the incident remains under investigation, police said.
